Rajasthan is the land of Kings. Folklore of heroism and romance resound from the formidable monuments that majestically stand to tell the tale of a bygone era. The magic of vibrant Rajasthan - its rich heritage, colourful culture, exciting desert safaris, shining sand-dunes, amazing variety lush forests and varied wildlife - makes it a destination nonpareil. Rajasthan is often portrayed as one vast open-air museum, with its relics so well preserved that it delights even the most skeptical traveler.
It is an incredible destination for the outdoor-tourist – take a safari on horses, camels, elephants or even in jeeps, with the Aravalis - India's oldest mountain range as the backdrop. Feast your eyes on spectacular sand-dunes, take the tiger trail, or just watch the birds in the wetlands. You can also choose to pamper yourself in the lavish heritage properties. Rajasthan has something for everyone –  one just has to choose an activity appropriate to one's temperament.
Rajasthan is where all the country’s similes and metaphors appear to have come together to create a visual extravaganza. Majestic palaces and rugged forts, spectacular deserts, wooded hills and tranquil lakes, bustling towns and quiet villages, amazing flora and fauna and of course, the colorful and vibrant people of Rajasthan form an intricate tapestry of mysticism, grandeur and rusticity. Behind the breathtaking beautiful facade, expect to find contradictions to the ordinary and mundane aspects of vacationing. Wherever you travel, particularly when you escape from the popular tourist destinations, you will come across the unexpected, whether it is a local fair or a bustling bazaar or mind-blowing architectural wonders. The mood and the rhythm of the countryside changes from one region to another, and from season to season. It is  a land of magical fantasies that remain a lifetime memory.
Festivals hold an unusual lure for the people of Rajasthan and they find any number of reasons to celebrate. Some of these occasions for revelry have been recently introduced by the Rajasthan Tourism Department to showcase the heritage of the region. Chances are, while traveling in the state, you will come across a number of local fairs and festivals in which you can participate.
However, some of the larger and more important celebrations are listed below. (This list does not include those festivals that are common to all parts of the country such as Holi - Festival of Colors, Diwali - Festival of Lights and Dussehra - Festival celebrating victory of Good over Evil.)
DESERT FESTIVAL: Jaisalmer exercises immense charm, but with the staging of the annual Desert Festival (January – February), it is one of the stretching sands around this desert citadel. A number of amusing events at the stadium include turban tying competitions and camel races.
NAGAUR FAIR: A trading fair for cattle and camels in January – February, it is a wonderful opportunity to catch up on rural life as owners from all over the state come to camp on the outskirts of Nagaur while they buy and sell animals. The hides of the animals, carved into beautiful patterns, are particularly interesting.
PUSHKAR FAIR: Among the most easily identifiable of Rajasthan’s many fairs, Pushkar has come to symbolize the  heartbeat of the people of the state. Held in November in Pushkar, the temple town close to Ajmer, where an 8th century temple of Brahma draws the faithful, it is located on the banks of lake. Pilgrims bathe here and pray in the temple, while the actual fair is held in the vast stretching desert around it. Here, traders set camp to strike deals at India’s, and probably the world’s largest camel fair, though horses are also sold. It is also a time for friends and families to get together, camp in the desert, entertain each other with folk songs and dances, cook meals over camp fires, and wander through the exuberant melee of people looking for handicrafts, or merely to stand in a queue for the giant wheel… Special tented camps are set up on the occasion for visitors but such is a draw of this fair internationally, that even these are soon exhausted, and people may have to stay in nearby Ajmer, or even as far as Jaipur, visiting here by day.
